What is a turnstile system?

A turnstile system is an electromechanical access control system that limits the passage of people entering and exiting a specific area and allows only one person to pass at a time. Turnstile systems are typically integrated with card access or similar payment systems.

A turnstile system alone cannot provide controlled access. They must be controlled by an access control system. For example, different control system equipment such as a card reader, fingerprint reader, or barcode reader can be installed on it to keep access under control.

A door and a card access system placed on the door alone cannot provide operational flexibility and entrance security to a facility. Because a person who passes through the door can bring in many people after them. In this case, turnstile systems become vital.

Furthermore, turnstile systems have a significant deterrent effect on entrance security.

What are the types of turnstile systems?

Today, different turnstile access control systems are produced for different purposes. When choosing a turnstile, the need must be correctly identified. The type of turnstile that is suitable for the need should be determined, and then model selections should be made.

Waist-high Turnstile:

The waist-high turnstile, also known as a tripod turnstile or a three-arm turnstile, is the most well-known and widely used turnstile system today. Since it usually has three arms and allows one person to pass by turning the arm at each passage, it is called a three-arm turnstile. It is a turnstile that we can see very frequently at building entrances, facility entrances, and gym entrances.

In recent years, in addition to the standard tripod turnstiles that we know, turnstiles called hiddingate or speed gates, which are also waist-high, have begun to be used. Speed gates are turnstile types that are suitable for architectural design because they are aesthetically pleasing. At the same time, these turnstiles offer fast passage opportunities.

Height Type Turnstile:

Height type turnstiles are preferred for areas that require high security. While it is possible to jump over the turnstile in the waist type turnstiles, it is not possible in the height type turnstiles. Height type turnstiles have many usage areas such as secure areas, R&D centers, data centers, stadiums, etc. Since the passage through these turnstiles will be slower than the waist type turnstiles, it may not be suitable for use in every area. Height type turnstiles also work in integration with access control systems like waist type turnstiles. In other words, access and exit is possible with personnel cards. Actually, height type turnstiles create a security gate.

Full height turnstiles

Full height turnstiles are known as security turnstiles in the market.

Disabled Access Turnstiles:

Similar to regular turnstiles, there are turnstiles designed for disabled access. These turnstiles are known as VIP turnstiles. These turnstiles are designed to facilitate easy passage of disabled vehicles. Disabled turnstiles can be manual or motorized.

With all these technological features, turnstile systems have become one of the indispensable security equipment in modern buildings. Building entrances have become much safer with turnstile systems. In addition, ensuring entrance security has become much easier.
