If you’re wondering what kind of choice you should make for installing a home camera system, you’re in the right place. I’ll try to provide information about the points you need to pay attention to when choosing a security camera system for your home.

What Type of Camera Should I Use?

There are two main types of cameras you can use in your home. The first one is an IP camera system, and the other is a security camera system that provides higher resolution than the old analog cameras with different names such as AHD, Analog HD, and HDCVI.

Since the camera distances in your home security system are short, there is no harm in using either IP cameras or analog HD cameras. If your budget is limited, I don’t see any problem with buying an AHD (Analog HD) camera since they are cheaper. Of course, if your budget allows, I always recommend choosing an IP camera.

You can easily watch live footage from both types of camera systems remotely from your workplace or mobile phone. Even if the systems have analog cameras, they can easily connect to the internet through the recording device they are connected to.

What kind of camera should I use?

There are two main types of cameras that you can use in your home. The first is an IP camera system, and the second is a high-resolution analog camera system that replaces older analog cameras, which are available in the market with various names such as AHD, Analog HD, HDCVI.

Since the camera distances in your home security system are short, there is no harm in using either IP cameras or analog HD cameras. AHD cameras will be more affordable, so if your budget is limited, I don’t see any harm in buying an AHD (Analog HD) camera. Of course, if your budget allows, I always recommend choosing an IP camera.

You can easily watch live from your remote or mobile phone on both different camera systems. Nowadays, even if the systems are analog cameras, they can easily access the internet through their connected recording device.

What should be the camera resolution?

In your home security camera, a resolution of FullHD (2Mp or 1080p) will suffice. Of course, if your budget is sufficient, you can buy 4Mp or 8Mp (4K), but if your budget is limited, there is no need to push yourself in this regard.

How should the camera lens selection be?

Since the areas in the camera system you will set up in your home are narrow, I do not think there is a need for adjustable varifocal lenses or motorized lenses. A fixed lens will suffice. The important point you should pay attention to here is to select a wider-angle lens. So, preferably, 2.8mm-3mm camera lenses will suffice. For example, you should not choose lenses with narrower angles, such as 8mm or 12mm. As the angle is narrow in these lenses, there is likely to be a significant blind spot in your home.

What should be the recording capacity of the security camera system?

Setting up a camera system in your home does not require very long-term recording. It will be more than enough for you to have a 30-day retroactive recording in your camera system at home. Therefore, be sure to request a calculation from the place where you will buy the camera system. Confirm that the HDD (hard disk) in your recording device corresponds to the result obtained from the calculation.

What should be the frame rate in camera recordings?

The recording frame rate is crucial in the camera system you will set up in your home. In this regard, I recommend reading our article, which can provide you with an example and information about the required frame rate for recording. However, it is not a problem to choose a value between 15 and 25 frames for recording.

How to set up a home camera system?

Setting up a home camera system is usually easy. If you are going to use an IP camera in your home and select a recording device with PoE feature, pulling 1 Cat6 data cable from the recording device to the cameras will be sufficient. If you are going to use an Analog HD camera, pulling 1 CCTV cable from the recording device to the cameras will suffice. An experienced technical service employee will make your cameras operational in approximately 1 or 2 days, depending on the number of cameras.

How Should Home Camera System Service Be?

Make sure to purchase your home camera system from a reliable firm that can provide service. Installing a camera system is a complex process, so do not treat it like buying an item from a grocery store. Problems can arise during installation or after it is set up, so having a reliable point of contact is crucial.

Is It Legal to Install a Home Camera System?

Since installing a home camera system is within your private property, there are no legal issues. You can decide to install a camera system in your home based on your own preferences without any legal concerns.

One of the other things you need to pay attention to is the compression formats used in the camera and recording devices. You can find detailed information about compression formats in our article. However, it is recommended to choose H.265 and H.265+ compression formats.
